The Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation, from May 28 to 30, 2025, carried out extensive sensitization engagements with scrap dealers and MMDAs in selected cities across the country. These engagements form part of the GIISDEC’s comprehensive initiative to regulate and formalize the scrap trade in Ghana. The initiative forms a key part of GIISDEC’s broader mandate to ensure the sustainable development of Ghana’s iron and steel industry, recognizing the critical importance of scrap metal, which is currently the only raw material for the local iron and steel industry.
The Engagements, which began in March this year in the Greater Accra region, covered the Northern, Upper East, Bono, Bono East, Ashanti, Eastern, Central, and Western regions of Ghana.
This initiative aims at combating the issues of theft, exploitation, and unsafe handling associated with the scrap business, and to ensure value retention and efficient raw material supply to the local steel industry.
The scrap dealers welcomed the initiative and commended GIISDEC for taking steps to regulate their activities. They called for support mechanisms like training, fair business conditions, and access to financing.
The initiative is expected to culminate in the rollout of a licensing and regulatory regime before the end of 2025 following cabinet approval.
